Australia announces reparation payments for Stolen Generations

One in three Indigenous children were taken from their families between 1910 and the 1970s

The Australian federal government announced on Thursday a AU$380 million (US$279.59 million) compensation scheme for Stolen Generations survivors after hundreds of survivors launched a class action.

The Stolen Generations were removed from their families between 1910 to 1970s.

According to the Healing Foundation ‘These children were forcibly removed from their families and communities through race-based policies set up by both State and Federal Governments.’

Eligible survivors will receive a one-off $75,000 payment in recognition of the harm caused by their forced removal, plus a further $7000 to support their healing. Local media reported.

‘This is a long called-for step, recognizing the bond between healing, dignity and the health and wellbeing of members of the Stolen Generations their families and their communities.’  The Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said in Parliament.

‘We don’t expect to see clear improvements immediately, but I think the approach we’ve got now gives us the best chance.’ Added Mr. Morrison.

The scheme is being established in the Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory (Canberra) and Jervis Bay Territory.
