Australia: Aboriginal Adults among first to receive AstraZeneca Vaccine

The rollout of Phase 1B of Australia’s coronavirus vaccination program started today, with about 6 million people eligible to receive their first doses, which includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander adults.

“This rollout of Phase 1B (…) it will involve 6 million people, everyone aged 70 and above in Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 55 and above.” Said Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Professor Michael Kidd to Tasmania Show.

Adults of any age with severe chronic disease, and a number of essential health care and other workers will be receiving the jab as well. 

Thirty-three Aboriginal Community Controlled Health organisations will be the first to administer the jab, including the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council’s health service in Liverpool, in Sydney’s south-west. Reported ABC News. 

According to the Department of Health of Australia, since March 2020, a total of 29,196 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 909 deaths, and approximately 147 active cases.
